Chris,
What were they for you? Inquiring minds want to know:)
I was an SRV fanatic when I first picked up the guitar...Hendrix as well..but I never really learned a lot of songs by other artists (aside from Pfunk) until I started teaching music.
I was pretty much just into making my own songs and creating my own sound.....I WISH I had learned more songs from the beginning...but it is what it is.
For me the some of the list would comprise of the following in no particular order:
Littlewing - Hendrix
Pink Moon - Nick Drake
Hotel California acoustic version - The eagles
The thrill is gone - B.B. King (and pretty much all blues for that matter).
This is a great question!
My first song I HAD to learn was a Mazzy Star song, "Into Dust." I was also inspired by the whole album Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams, and a live album I chanced upon by Townes Van Zandt. And Eric Clapton's From the Cradle.
I guess I was drawn to songs that I thought I might be able to play. I have never really been inspired by virtuoso guitar work that seemed too far out of my reach.
And I still would love to be able to learn how to play some blues fingerpicking like this instructional cd I have by Happy Traum. Doesn't matter how "instructional" it is. I think syncopated rhythms while keeping a steady bass line with my thumb is not in the cards for me. :)
